If you're a family looking for a home with a yard, a renter who needs to commute to work in the southeast corridor, or someone who wants space and safety without paying Lakewood prices—Garfield Heights deserves a serious look.

Where Is Garfield Heights?

Garfield Heights is an independent city—not technically part of Cleveland, though it borders the southeast edge of the city and is fully within the Greater Cleveland metro area.

It sits about 8 miles southeast of downtown Cleveland, just south of the Cleveland/Garfield Heights border. From here, major roads and interstates branch out in multiple directions, making it genuinely accessible.

  • Bordered by Cleveland to the north and northwest
  • Adjacent to Maple Heights (east), Newburgh Heights (west), and Brecksville Road corridor (south)

To downtown Cleveland: About 20–30 minutes via I-77 or I-480 depending on traffic. Easy commute for most hours of the day; rush hour adds 10–15 minutes.

To the Cleveland Clinic / University Circle: 20–25 minutes east via I-480 or surface streets.

To the airport (Hopkins): About 25–35 minutes via I-480 west.

To Akron: About 30–35 minutes south via I-77—making Garfield Heights a practical option for people who work in Akron but prefer to live closer to Cleveland.

Highway access is genuinely one of Garfield Heights' strongest assets for renters with cars.

By Bus

RTA bus service connects Garfield Heights to downtown Cleveland, but routes are limited and require transfers. Plan for longer commute times—45 minutes to an hour to downtown by bus. If you're car-free, transit-dependent transportation is challenging here.

It's not a neighborhood where people move to be seen. It's a place people move to build stable, quiet lives—to have a yard for the kids, space to park a truck, a basement for the holidays.

The community association and local government are engaged and functional. Streets are maintained. Parks are usable. It's not glamorous, and that's not the point.
